THCV, Tetrahydrocannabivarin. What is it and what are the benefits of THCV?

THCV, Tetrahydrocannabivarin. What is it and what are the benefits of THCV?

The cannabis industry is getting quite excited that we are close to the worlds first stabilised THCV rich cannabis seed variety. THCV is also known as Tetrahydrocannabivarin and it is usually only a minor cannabinoid found in cannabis. Until now, THC and CBD have been the two main cannabinoids found in elevated quantities in cannabis. But hopefully that should all change very soon. Dutch Passion are working towards a THCV feminised seed strain which is hoped to be available in 2020.

THCV. Closely related to THC in chemical structure

THCV, as the name suggests, is a very close chemical relative to THC. For the scientifically minded, THCV has a side chain with 3 carbon atoms whereas THC has a side chain with 5 carbon atoms. However the small molecular difference has quite a marked effect of the effects and properties of THCV. It’s worth saying that THCV is an entirely natural component of cannabis.

The anticipated Dutch Passion THCV seed variety is the result of many years of patient breeding and selection through numerous generations. Each generation becoming gradually more and more rich in THCV in the dried buds.

THCV. What does it feel like?

There are still plenty of questions, medical and recreational, about the value and uses of THCV. We do know that, when taken in high amounts, THCV has a euphoric mood lift similar to THC. But, at the same time THCV is thought to dampen the effects of THC. Technically THCV is known as a cannabinoid receptor type 1 antagonist. THCV is also thought to be appetite suppressing, with roles in the metabolic process and a possible interest as a diabetes treatment. This Dutch Passion blog on THCV, CBG and CBD is interesting background info on new cannabinoid research and breeding.

THCV. Where does THCV come from?

Historically, varieties with THCV levels that are higher than average are often reported to come from areas such as China, India, Nepal, Thailand, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s worth saying that typical varieties of cannabis commonly available in the dispensaries/coffeeshops/social clubs have THCV levels below 0.2%. Even when THCV is present in a variety, it is usually present at trace levels.

The anticipated Dutch Passion THCV feminised seed variety should have around 6-8% THCV and a similar level of THC.

THCV. Following in the footsteps of THC and CBD

Feedback from medical and recreational users will be particularly interesting. Those that can remember the emergence of CBD rich cannabis will recall that initial reactions to CBD were subdued. It was only some time later, after many people had the chance to try CBD for themselves that the real interest began.

THCV is only the 3rd cannabinoid to make it to the cannabinoid main-stage. THC and CBD are probably the only cannabinoids which most members of the public could name. But THCV is almost here. For Dutch Passion, it’s a fascinating time and we are curious to see what the feedback will be from the feminised THCV rich seeds.

How much THCV medical research has been done?

THCV is a possible novel treatment for obesity-associated glucose intolerance. GW Pharmaceuticals are studying plant-extracted tetrahydrocannabivarin for type 2 diabetes. It is known as GWP42004, those with a technical mind should read this THCV research paper which discusses potential uses of THCV for diabetes. Since diabetes is such a widespread condition, any future potential THCV drugs would have a very wide application.

This THCV research document looks at the treatment of diabetes with THCV alone, and in combination with CBD. This THCV statement from GW Pharmaceuticals is interesting reading for those interested in potential medical uses and applications for THCV.

The research from GW Pharmaceuticals is interesting, but there are no medical promises yet. A lot more work needs to be done. But all the interest from ‘big pharma’ tells us that the senior pharmaceutical boffins have a sense of expectation that the cannabinoids have a useful bio-potential. It’s almost as if they expect to find each new cannabinoid is useful for something. It’s just a question of finding out what.

What is the future for THCV?

Expectations for the medical uses of cannabis remain very high. In places like the USA and Canada, medical marijuana sales are a multi-billion dollar business already…. and still growing fast.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that the large pharmaceutical companies are paying extremely close attention to cannabis and the many cannabinoids which it contains.

According to wiki, there are 113 cannabinoids. It’s remarkable to consider that so far only really THC and CBD have had any significant scientific research. THCV is a welcome addition to that select club. In the coming years Dutch Passion hope to be able to offer feminised cannabis seeds rich in other novel cannabinoids.

What type of THCV seeds will be available?

If all goes well, Dutch Passion will release the photoperiod feminised THCV cannabis seeds in 2020. We will give more details nearer the release date. But expect harvests with around 6-8% of THCV and a similar level of THC. At this stage we don't have THCV autoflower seeds, but it remains a possibility for the future.

After THCV rich feminised cannabis seeds, which cannabinoid comes next?

Good question. Dutch Passion are looking at several novel cannabis varieties and possible parent strains rich in unusual cannabinoids. It’s still a little too early to be making firm commitments. It’s a long and intricate process, often involving many years of patient breeding with no guarantees of success at the end.

But rest assured that Dutch Passion Seed Company (and quite probably the whole of the pharmaceutical industry) are very interested in new cannabis strains rich in some of the new and unexplored minor cannabinoids.

Until then, keep reading the Dutch Passion blog for the latest information on feminised seed availability of THCV rich cannabis. We hope to have more definite news in the coming months.

Gefeliciteerd met je mooie prestatie! Hier op Vancouver Island, BC Canada zijn we erg opgewonden om THC-Victory te ontmoeten en te leren kennen, en we zijn erg onder de indruk en trots op je prestatie. We are a club of growers who are either Dutch immigrants to Canada, 1st generation Canadians with Dutch parents, or have lived and worked in The Netherlands and have become great admirers of Dutch culture, society and expertise. We observe, appreciate, recreate and celebrate many Dutch traditions, in particular we celebrate Dutch custodial efforts for all these decades while waiting for the day the world finally comes calling after awoken from its anti cannabis nightmare. I always describe it to people as a contemporary version of St. Patrick and his fellow Irish monks who are credited with saving Christianity by creating and securing against wave after wave of Viking onslaught, the important texts upon which the religion is based. We simply want to show our gratitude here, so, thank you, for what you’ve done in the past, the present, and it seems to us, the future as well.
