Seattle. It’s 20 months since Washington state voted to legalize recreational cannabis for adult use. And in the last few days the first few legal sales have taken place. It has taken 20 months for the state to organise the legal framework which has allowed people to apply to open dispensaries or grow pot. In addition there have been delays as dispensary owners got their pot tested at the analytical services provider. The bureaucracy in Washington has been significantly more problematic than in Colorado, and some observers in Washington state have said that there will not be enough cannabis to meet demand. At the moment less than 100 Washingtonians have stepped forward with the legal paperwork (and the seeds) needed to become legal growers.
However, these are just teething problems for Washington’s embryonic pot industry. Once the red tape and paperwork have been dealt with we fully expect that Washington State will once again prove that taxation and regulation is a more responsible and effective approach than prohibition
