The production, sale and use of medical cannabis is to be legalized by Colombia according to Justice Minister Reyes. This is yet another significant shift in South American Cannabis politics, and follows Uruguay who have already legalized cannabis. Other countries such as Chile and Mexico are already pushing ahead with their own plans for reform. Sales of recreational cannabis will not be allowed at this stage, with the Colombian Government keen to exploit the medical benefits of cannabis. It is estimated that around 400,000 Colombians will benefit immediately from the plans to introduce medical cannabis. Under Colombia's 'Personal freedom' laws small quantities of drugs for personal use are decriminalised, but the new laws will fully legalize medical cannabis in the commercial quantities required for a licensed medicine.
