Ireland. Government to decriminalize small quantities of drugs for 'personal use'

In a surprise announcement Ireland has announced that they will decriminalise the possession of small amounts of drugs for personal consumption.  This will include Cannabis as well as harder drugs including Heroin, and Cocaine. The new policies will place Ireland amongst some of the most progressive countries in the world for their drug laws.  The Minister in charge of Irelands Drug Policy, Aodhan O Riordain also announced special ‘injection’ rooms in Dublin which will allow hard drug addicts some safety for the first time.  The Irish drugs policy is based on harm reduction rather than the traditional approach of punishment and prohibition, something which has failed all over the world.  Those who profit from the drugs trade would still be prosecuted but users would not be.
