Growers in the Northern hemisphere are thinking about getting ready to harvest their outdoor crops at this time of year. But in the southern hemisphere growers are just getting ready to start their season. Growers everywhere from Australia to South America are seeing their days get longer and the sun get stronger. Dutch Passion spoke with ‘Bonz’ an experienced grower from Argentina to understand the trends for growers this year.
Over the years I was fortunate to make numerous grows, both indoors and outdoors, classic varieties as well as hybrid crosses. In South America it is quite common for growers to create seeds of their own hybrids, often we do this using parent plants grown from seedbank varieties from companies like Dutch Passion.
As I started to think more and more about the different varieties I kept reading about Autofems. I had the opportunity to plant a new variety, in this case the delicious and surprising "Think Different", I did not hesitate. I made an indoor grow, in 30cm diameter pots under 1000watts HPS. The soil mix I feel always played a big role in my crop quality and therefore I do not buy ‘ready made’ mixes, but I make them myself from equal quantities of humus, peat and soil. Once mixed I add perlite until the mixture resembles snow.
I often research seed germination techniques, sometimes pre-soaking seeds in water, sometimes planting them directly into the soil mix. I can compare how quickly the seedlings develop and build my knowledge of the cannabis plant development. I managed to germinate and grow 100% of the seeds I put in ground, demonstrating that genetics and conservation of Dutch passion seeds was excellent.
This time I also tried something new, with AutoFems I gave 24 hours continuous daylight hours for the first 3 weeks of life, then changed to 20 hours of light and 4 of darkness. The plants had sustained steady growth during the first 30 days and eventually reached a height of between 1.2 and 1.5 meters. During the first week of 20-hour daily light there were not many changes in the plants, perhaps growth continued at a slower pace. At 30 days I began to see female pre-flowers in almost all plants. This trend continued strongly during the next few weeks, all the female plant hormones were forcing the plants to create lots of buds.
At the end of this period, I have once again changed the duration to a system of 19 hours light/5 hours dark. Near the end the plants were particularly thirsty (watered every 2 days with 1litre per plant and finally 1 litre every day. At the end the size of the blooms stabilized, but the amount of crystals in the buds was extraordinary. The size and shape of them was hard to believe for an Autofem. They have improved dramatically in recent years. For South America AutoFem’s are now a real alternative to traditional varieties.
More Think Different buds near harvest, lots of them!
At 80 days after germination we proceeded to harvest. We dried the bud on the branch for 10 days and then the buds are cured for another 14 days. The result has been 130grs of buds from each Think Different plant. They are sweet and fruity and extremely resinous. I recommend Think Different for any grower who wants an excellent performance quantity, enhanced flavor and quality effect.”
Many thanks to Bonz for his Argentinean update, we expect to see more and more growers use AutoFem’s for indoor and outdoor crops in the coming months. But it is good to see that auto’s are already performing well for southern hemisphere growers. We wish them all the best with their efforts.
