A team of cancer researchers from the University of London have reported that cannabis extracts can help slow the growth of cancerous tumours when used in combination with existing radiotherapy treatments.

The team looked at the chemicals tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), these are produced naturally in the cannabis plant.  THC and CBD are the two most widely researched cannabinoid chemicals and these were studied as part of research into the treatment of brain cancer tumours in mice.  The team from the University of London treated brain tumours in mice in a variety of ways.  Some with and some completely without any treatment.  Some mice with  cannabinoids alone.  Some mice with irradiation alone or with the cannabinoids and irradiation at the same time.

They found tumours growing in the brains of mice were slowed down when the THC and CBD cannabinoids were combined with irradiation.  The real question is where this research will lead for human research.  It would also be interesting to understand in simple terms how the cannabis works, perhaps that exactly what future work will try to identify.

The final comment is a quote from the report

"Taken together, our data highlight the possibility that these cannabinoids can prime glioma cells to respond better to ionizing radiation, and suggest a potential clinical benefit for glioma patients by using these two treatment modalities. Mol Cancer Ther; 1–13."
