USA. Political pressure to end the ridiculous, illogical and failed prohibition of cannabis has increased to new levels as the New York Times publishes an article pleading for an end to cannabis prohibition. It’s another high profile voice telling politicians that the laws against cannabis make no sense at all. The New York Times says “Its been more than 40 years since Congress passed the current ban on marijuana, inflicting great harm on society just to prohibit a substance far less dangerous than alcohol. The federal Government should repeal the ban on marijuana”
The NYT also points out that cannabis prohibition has not reduced cannabis usage, merely guaranteed the tax-free profits for organised criminals over 4 decades. Cannabis prohibition has also ensured that young black americans are far more likely to be arrested and persecuted than hispanics or whites even though cannabis usage is evenly distriributed across different races. In summary, cannabis prohibition has been a disaster for the USA and cost the country $Billions. The same is true for the rest of the world. The laws against cannabis are doing far more damage than cannabis itself. The prohibition of cannabis also fails to recognise its numerous medical benefits.
There was a time when politicians had to worry about how the newspapers would react to talk of legal cannabis. Now the newspapers themselves can’t understand why marijuana is illegal. These are the last days of cannabis prohibition.
