USA. Obama says smoking pot is less dangerous than drinking alcohol
President Obama has astonished quite a number of people with his remarks about cannabis in the last few days. In a recent interview with the New Yorker, Obama frustrated the federal cannabis prohibitionists with some remarks which are more outspoken than we have seen from previous Presidents,
"As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life," he told The New Yorker. "I don't think it is more dangerous than alcohol".
The remarks clearly undermine the 'official' Federal position on cannabis, and make it increasingly difficult for those wanting to slow down the tide of cannabis legalizations which are sweeping from one state to the next in the USA at the moment. Obama's remarks are also important politically since the Presidents views often define those of the people around him. Very few of Obama's staffers will be keen to openly disagree with him. Many USA pot-prohibitionists are coming to term with the fact that the golden days of cannabis prohibition are now firmly in the past and can never return. It's another piece of great news for cannabis campaigners who are enjoying some wonderful news.
