Despite some last minute attempts to prevent it, Washington DC has famously decriminalised medical marijuana. It’s a significant moment, the capital of the USA, the country that gave us the war on drugs, has decriminalised medical cannabis. Its the result of a great deal of hard work and political campaigning by American medical cannabis proponents.
Public use of cannabis will remain illegal in Washington DC, but private individuals are now free to enjoy their medical pot in the comfort of their own homes. The penalty for being caught with pot on the streets is around $25 for an ounce or less, a similar crime to littering.
Its a sensible move by the USA. Prohibition of cannabis had few uses anyway, prohibition doesn’t reduce consumption and only favours organised criminals. Although cannabis usage is the same amongst whites, blacks and other race groups it is young black makes who are most likely to be arrested and given a criminal record. The unfairness, in every respect, of cannabis prohibition was the fundamental reason for Washington DC to decriminalise it. Soon the rest of the world needs to catch up with the modern USA approach to cannabis regulation.
