USA. Washington DC Mayor signs medical marijuana decriminalization bill

The legal efforts have taken years to reach this stage, but following a great deal of work by campaigners in Washington DC it now looks inevitable that it will be permitted to own up to 1 ounce (28g) of medical cannabis by July 2014.  The Mayor, Vince Gray, has approved the Council Bill which decriminalises up to one ounce of pot.  Instead of a criminal record if you are caught it will now merely be a €25 ticket (less expensive than a parking ticket in Washington DC), with no criminal record and no arrest.
Legalization campaigners may not have got the fully legal cannabis status enjoyed in other states, but this is a remarkable victory for common sense in the nations capital and many regard this particular victory as one of the most important political victories for cannabis in the USA so far.
The cannabis decriminalisation bill has already been approved by the council and now it must go through a 60-day review period before becoming law on July 1st.
