The incredible mainstream popularity of CBD (Cannabidiol) has taken many people by surprise. CBD is a cannabinoid compound which occurs naturally in cannabis. CBD is now available in many health foods and wellness shops in our high streets. You can buy CBD in oil form, often diluted with hemp seed oil or olive oil. You can also buy CBD creams, capsules and edibles. CBD is used by people for various reasons and by people with various conditions. People suffering from various ailments from epilepsy to arthritis report benefits from CBD. Perhaps it is the fact that CBD isn’t psychoactive which has helped the rapid acceptance. Or perhaps it is because consumers feel that CBD is a ‘safe’ part of the cannabis plant. Whatever the reasons, CBD is perceived to be a valuable dietary supplement by millions of people. However, CBD can’t be publicised as a medical supplement since it hasn’t been through the compulsory medical testing procedures required by-products which claim medical benefits.
Cannabis seeds which give rise to cannabis plants with very low THC levels are now available. Varieties such as Dutch Passion’s CBD Charlotte’s Angel feminized marijuana seeds tend to be around 15-20% CBD with THC levels often well below 1%. Actual CBD and THC levels will vary somewhat from phenotype to phenotype. But THC levels are generally very low and this makes it a great variety for medical cannabis growers looking for a non-psychoactive medical variety.
Dutch Passion was one of the first large cannabis seed companies to start to offer feminized seeds which would produce CBD rich buds. In the cannabis industry, ‘CBD rich’ typically means that there is more than 4% CBD in the dry buds. The first popular CBD rich cannabis varieties included CBD SkunkHaze and CBD Kush which produce a roughy 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD. Many medical cannabis growers found superior physical effects, such as a deeper ‘body stone’. Some MS (Multiple Sclerosis) patients reported better symptom relief with CBD rich cannabis varieties. This included reduced muscle spasticity (muscle soreness/stiffness).

Fans of autoflowering cannabis seeds can also grow high CBD and low THC crops with the feminized autoflower seeds of CBD Auto Charlotte’s Angel. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to grow your own CBD rich cannabis, with low THC (usually below 1% THC). The autoflower seeds grow well under a daily light cycle with 20 hours of light and 4 hours of darkness. They take around 75 days to grow from seed to harvest and are easy to grow. They also grow well outdoors, taking around 100 days from seed to harvest.
The mainstream pharmaceutical world is very interested in the properties of CBD. European company GW Pharmaceuticals produces an oral spray called Sativex. This liquid spray has a 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD. It is supplied as a mouth spray to alleviate neuropathic pain, spasticity, overactive bladder and other symptoms of multiple sclerosis. GW Pharmaceuticals describe themselves as world leaders in cannabinoid science. So far their medical products have been based on THC and CBD. Anyone interested in reading some scientific research papers on the medical applications can see around 20 of the best ones here on the GW Pharmaceutical ‘Research Papers’ page. Whilst most of the papers discuss CBD, some also discuss the minor cannabinoids CBDV, CBG and THCV. This suggests that there is clear medical interest in these cannabinoids. The research papers are focussed on epilepsy, inflammation, oncology (cancer care) and psychiatric illnesses. That’s a remarkably broad range of applications for any medicine. Given the depth of medical interest, it’s surprising that cannabis has taken so long for the medical professionals to embrace. Perhaps that is primarily due to the unique levels of political interference and hysteria which cannabis has attracted.
Many heavy cannabis users occasionally take a cannabis tolerance break. This is useful if you find cannabis is less enjoyable, or if you find that you need to smoke/vape very large amounts of cannabis to get high. Taking a break from cannabis for a week or two really helps re-set your tolerance so you can enjoy powerful highs after the tolerance break. However it can be difficult for daily cannabis users to quit for a week or two. But CBD rich buds can be a real help. A vape/smoke of CBD buds won’t get you high but it mysteriously removes he craving for cannabis. It’s a good way to reduce the difficulty of quitting your favourite herb for a few days. Many people that want to reduce their tobacco usage also find that CBD rich buds help reduce the craving for tobacco.
Dutch Passion sell a high quality CBD oil available in 5% and 10% concentrations. A new CBG (Cannabigerol) oil will soon be available. The Dutch Passion cannabis extracts are produced using a modern CO2 extraction method which is solvent free, ensuring maximum purity of the oil. The oil also contains a full spectrum of terpenes and minor cannabinoids.

Despite not being psycho active the popularity of CBD has been remarkable. Imagine how much more interest would be created if (and when) new cannabis varieties become available with new psycho active cannabinoids. The good news is that companies like Dutch Passion are working hard to offer cannabis seeds which will produce elevated levels of other minor cannabinoids such as THCv.
