Another newer strain from Dutch Passion is The Ultimate, released to the market in 2009 already, only being available in feminised form. The Ultimate was bred with the intention to create an ideal combination of both huge yields and connoisseur cannabis quality, expected to be a really ultimate biosynthesis of both characteristics. This is a strain profile that can only be found quite rarely in the world of seed varieties, the most famous strain so far in this regard is Chronic from Serious Seeds. But now there’s The Ultimate competing for the crown of big yield/high quality strains. Dutch Passion reports: “Through careful breeding we have created one of our most important strains, we call it ‘The Ultimate’ as it combines some of the heaviest yields we have ever seen with genuine connoisseur quality.” The Ultimate genetically consists of 50% indica and 50% sativa, representing both side of the cannabis plant spectrum. According to Dutch Passion, it normally grows to a height of only 60-75 cm - ideal for product grow rooms. Flowering time is 8-10 weeks, with explosive final bud growth during the last two weeks of flowering. The Ultimate requires quite high fertiliser dosages during the growth cycle and is expected to be resistant to mould and but rot, despite of its huge and very dense buds. This property makes it a very suitable candidate for the greenhouse as well. Harvest time under natural light is second half of October.
Considering these great overall characteristics, it’s no wonder Dutch Passion enthuses about The Ultimate, reporting “Our growers have never seen a plant yield as heavily with this level of quality. This is a recession busting strain of epic proportions and is guaranteed not to disappoint. The Ultimate is already setting new standards amongst Dutch commercial growers and is set to become another Dutch Passion legend.”
Big words and promises that once again called The Doc into action, a very skilled and experienced cultivation guru. He only sowed three feminised The Ultimate seeds, because they were grown together with two Mekong High plants, and his grow room is not the biggest. Also, his principle is to let his plants grow long and large, as he always wants to tap the full potential of only a few plants rather than cultivating many small plants instead. All the three The Ultimate seeds germinated well and fast, being grown under two 125 W CFL lights (6400 K) in the first week of growth. At the end of week one, The Doc reported “The three plants have been a little bit slow in the first days of growth. I will transplant them now to 11 litre pots and put them into the actual grow room, exposed to two Planta Star HPS lamps, 1x 600 W, 1x 400 W. One week later, vegetative growth had gotten into full gear. The three The Ultimate plants were growing very compact and indica typical, with 4-5 internodes already at a height of only about 10 cm. Leaves were looking like pure indica leaves at the beginning, being short, dark green and very broad. The Doc noted “Following Dutch Passion’s recommendation of higher nutrient dosages than usual, I give the plants somewhat more fertiliser than I generally do. After 21 days in the vegetative stage, the three plants were still growing like pure indicas, with no hint of any sativa influence in sight. Side branching was about developing strongly, while the plants still had quite a low height of 15-20 cm. They were growing very uniformly, with thick main stems and side branches.
After 25 days, The Doc induced flowering by cutting the light cycle down to 12/12. Within the first week of flowering, all of the three plants revealed their gender which was female, indeed. The plants exhibited a stronger stretching effect now and, with 8-10 internodes, had arrived at a height of about 50 cm after the first week of flowering. After 14 days in the flowering stage, The Doc reported “Excellent side branching with plenty of flower clusters emerging from the nodes. Plants are still compact, but one Ultimate plant has become taller than the other two meanwhile, also having somewhat wider internodes. Shade leaves have become significantly longer and thinner, in fact looking like a combination of 50% sativa and 50% indica. The stretching effect still heavily continues, with the three plants having reached a height of 70-100 cm.”
Only one week later, on flowering day 21, the tallest The Ultimate plant measured already 130 in height, so it turned out plants were much taller than described by Dutch Passion. However, The Doc had left his plants in the vegetative stage longer than usual and given them much more light than an average grower. He even was happy that The Ultimate was able to achieve considerably bigger growth dimensions than expected, as his three plants were growing really great and expected to deliver a very fat yield in the end. On the calyxes and flower leaves, resin glands had meanwhile started to emerge. After 28 days of flowering, The Doc noted “All the three plants are really heavily blooming now, buds are getting dense and have a very good size already. The tallest plant now is even 160 cm tall, the two other 120 and 130 cm. That all looks highly promising.”
After 35 days of flowering, The Doc was looking at impressive The Ultimate plants, all the main stems and side branches were densely laden with thick and more and more harder buds. “The tallest plant is about building a sensationally big top cola”, The Doc reported. And after 42 days, he was amazed the buds were still keeping on heavily gaining width and density. “The top cola of the tallest plant is as long and broad as a strong man’s arm!” he enthused, and kept on doing so after 49 days of flowering: “Bud growth still is explosive, pretty amazing. All of the plants do have a very high calyx-to-leaf ratio, it’s a real cannasseur’s delight to look at these tremendous beautiful buds. And there’s not a single brown stigma yet, I’m really curious how far this will lead in the next weeks… The tallest plant now measures 170 cm in height, but seems to have stopped height growth. This is also true for the other two plants that are 145 and 150 cm tall. The plants are giving off a strong sweet scent that also has a fruity note.”
One week later, after 56 days of flowering, flower stigma withering had noticeably started and suddenly proceeded very quickly. The calyxes were already very well swollen and resin production was proper, though not abundant. But The Ultimate owes it name to other characteristics than resin opulence. After 63 days of flowering, The Doc reported “I’ve just already harvested the top colas of two plants. They were so huge and dense I feared they might fall victim to mould, although Dutch Passion has promised they are resistant to this and the air humidity in my grow room is lower than 50%. But I’m so happy with these impressive top colas that I don’t want to go for even the slightest of risks. Also, at least about 70% of the stigmas had turned brown and I didn’t expect the buds to become even heavier, at least not in relevant dimensions. After 70 days, at the end of the harvest window stated by Dutch Passion, The Doc could harvest the rest of the plants. His harvest baskets were full of thick and heavy buds. “As announced by Dutch Passion, The Ultimate exploded in the last weeks of flowering, indeed, so it is important to be patient with the plants. Also, resin production doesn’t become intense before the last third of flowering”, The Doc pointed out.
Altogether, the plants had achieved a yield of 323 grams which left The Doc well pleased of course. He dried them slowly and thoroughly, fermenting them a little bit. After the drying process had been finished, the buds smelled deliciously sweet and somewhat fruity. A real pleasure to smoke, and the high, expectedly, expressed both sides of the spectrum, starting off with a great rush of activating sativa energy and then, after a while, changing into a more body related, indica like effect. Very potent stuff it was and The Doc came to the conclusion The Ultimate had fully convinced him and lived up to the high expectations raised by Dutch Passion. The Ultimate - yield and quality combination style at its very best!
